Factory Fab

Our Genius “Retreader” Doug Vautour knocked it out of the park on this restoration.. take two vintage 1940s factory stools from an old New Bedford mill, sand well, add high gloss enamel paint in true factory colors – and here you have it – the latest trend in collectible furniture! I have a soft spot for vintage factory items, a million years ago I worked in a timeless machine shop factory with ACRES of drill presses, lathes, and grinders –  all mixed with the aroma 0f machine oil and the crunch of metal scrap under your steel toed boots.  The roar of the orchestra of equipment was no doubt a forbear of the “heavy metal”  music of later years – and who knew at the time that it was short lived?  Kudos to those wise people who are realizing that our country’s business rehabilitation will be dependent on the resurgence of our manufacturing prowess. Go Factory USA – and vintage Factory! Happy Columbus Day ~

One, two, three O’ Leary

If you grew up in Boston, you knew this game.  Somehow the cadence of it has been bouncing around my head  – maybe it’s the pristine day, the back to school feel in the air, kids along the sidewalk… and if you weren’t alone bouncing a ball – you could play Relievio, Giant Step, the Wonder Ball, Chinese Jump Rope and Double Dutch (knees that don’t creak an absolute pre-requisite for DD).. so to match the early 1960s wistfulness – check out our new treats for the week:

I want to be Frank.

Nice n Easy album

What is it with Frank Sinatra? What secret mojo of cool did this beautifully voiced and incredibly talented gentleman mine in the streets of New Jersey?  And how on earth do we get a tiny vial of it to sprinkle on ourselves for those special outings when we must be “oh so hip?” All questions for the great oracle… in the mean time, I’ll have to be content for one more listening of “Summer Wind”….

Drying hydrangeas..

image

It’s that time of year- to clip the hydrangeas in your yard or a friend’s, and with a vintage canning jar – create a lovely tableau for your home that can last until Spring blooms again.  Simply cut the flowers to the desired stem length, strip the leaves and place in an empty (no water!) container.  Enjoy!

Vintage Marvella

image

Maybe it was the recent TV special on Jacqueline Kennedy that had me re-looking at this gorgeous piece from that time – It’s a real beauty and would easily time travel with our fashions today. Wear with a crisp white oxford shirt, jeans, a smart blazer – (and accent with a bright pashmina) you are good to go.

Granny Squares!

image

Remember these? Well this gem is in great shape and ready to keep you warm. Now only $15! That’s cheaper than a drive through bill at Burger King! …I remember when we were in junior high at Girls’ Latin School, the trend was to make things that you could use.. probably because we didn’t have cell phones to keep our hands busy with texting, so we used to craft.. embroidery, knitting, crochet and sew.  I know it’s an art that is enjoying a renaissance, and I still have a quilt on my own bucket list (really Shirley are you kidding?) but more of the quilt disease in another post..

So come and grab this lovely vintage afghan to cuddle you through the winter nights!  Was $30, now $15!
